Infrasound sensors are precision instruments designed to detect and measure low-frequency atmospheric pressure waves, known as infrasound, that fall below the range of human hearing, typically under 20 Hz. These waves can travel long distances through the atmosphere and are produced by a variety of natural and human-made sources, including volcanic eruptions, severe weather systems, avalanches, industrial explosions, and even distant rocket launches.
These sensors are engineered with wide frequency response capabilities and very low self-noise, making them effective in capturing both faint background signals and powerful nearby events without distortion. To ensure long-term, reliable operation in challenging environments, infrasound sensors are housed in rugged, weather-sealed enclosures and are designed to function in a wide range of temperatures and conditions.
Infrasound sensors are typically used in array configurations to enhance detection capabilities and enable signal correlation, direction-finding, and event localization. They often feature differential signal outputs for noise reduction, and many are designed with low power consumption to support remote or portable operation. Integrated acoustic inlet manifolds allow these sensors to be used effectively with wind noise reduction systems, which help isolate true acoustic signals from environmental noise.
Because of their sensitivity, durability, and precision, infrasound sensors play a crucial role in fields such as atmospheric science, seismology, environmental monitoring, and global treaty verification. They provide valuable information about dynamic Earth processes that would otherwise remain undetected.
