Updating Firmware For RT130's

The following is the procedure to upgrade the firmware of a RT130. The upgrade is applied to the RT130 from a firmware file which is copied to CF card and inserted to the RT130 before it is powered on.

NOTE: For EPIC RT130 dataloggers, please contact us before changing the firmware, we may not support all versions.  Thank you.

2013-04-02: We are updating to RT130 firmware version 3.4.3.  This update will not be made in the field as it includes reprogramming chips from several boards.  Please contact us for further information.

1.  Obtain a copy of the new firmware.  EPIC will supply this.

2.  The firmware file will be in a folder with the name of the firmware version (for example, the folder name might be "3.0.0"). The firmware file will be called "main.s3". Copy the "main.s3" to a blank CF card and make the file read-only. (This procedure will still work if you cannot make the file read-only.)

3.  Get current parameters from the DAS. Connect the Clie to the DAS, using PFC-130 program: Work with Configuration -> From DAS -> Save as (enter yourfilename).
4.  Unmount/remove the CF card from the computer.

5.  Power off the RT130 which needs the firmware upgrade.  Insert the CF card with the "main.s3" file into one of the RT130 card slots.  Remove any card that might be in the other slot.  Leave the cap off of the disk well so you can observe the red/green LED.

6.  Power on the RT130.  The first line of the LCD screen should turn into a black bar for a few seconds, then the message "DISK IN USE, DO NOT DISTURB" will be displayed and the red LED in the disk well should come on.  This will continue for about 1 to 2 minutes. If you remove the CF card or power off the RT130 when in this state you will break it.

7.  When the LCD message changes to "UPDATING FLASH, DO NOT DISTURB", and the LED changes to green the CF card may be removed. If you power off the RT130 in this state you will break it.

    a. If you were able to change the main.s3 file attributes to 'read only' in Step 2, you must remove the CF card before it finishes updating the firmware (i.e. during Step 6), otherwise the RT130 will begin upgrading its firmware again and you will have to wait another 1 to 2 minutes.

    b. If you were unable to change the main.s3 file attributes to 'read only' in Step 2, then when the RT130 finishes upgrading the firmware, it will automatically delete the main.s3 file from the CF card.  If you have more than one RT130 to upgrade you will have to copy the main.s3 file from the computer to the CF card again.

8. After upgrading, verify the firmware version.  Connect a Clié to the RT130 and, using the PFC-130 program:  Control -> Status -> Version (CPU)

9. Resend parameters to the DAS.  With the Clie connected: Work with Configuration -> Load (select yourfilename) -> Send to DAS.   Check LCD screen for correct experiment name.
