RT130 ALERT - Issue when using two 4GB CF cards

Jan. 5, 2015

EPIC recently received reports of RT130’s failing when using two RefTek 4G CF cards at moderately low temperatures during an Antarctic experiment. We have duplicated the failure in our lab and in our testing the failure was associated with a specific version of RefTek well board (RT526D). Although we have not had failures in our testing with earlier or later versions of the board, our sample set is small and we cannot rule out problems with these boards when using two 4G CF cards. We have communicated with RefTek about the issue and at this time they are in agreement with these findings.

The CMG 40T-1sec seismometer looks, on the outside, just like the CMG 40T-30sec, intermediate period seismometer. Its response, however, is tuned to short-period signals (1-100Hz). One hundred of these feedback seismometers were purchased for the Flexible Array sensor pool.

Salient Features: Flat response to velocity from 120 seconds to about 10 Hz Low power Installation Tips: Example of STS-2/RT130 Setup One-pager field sheet

Troubleshooting Tips: If you cannot center the masses of even one of the 3 elements of the STS-2, all your data could be compromised. The document provided here will guide you to a 'manual' process for attempting to get those masses centered, IF and ONLY IF the masses do not center after repeated (a dozen tries) centering commands.

Kinemetrics Episensor ES-T Accelerometer

Salient Features:

The Kinemetrics EpiSensor force-balanced accelerometer is a uniaxial surface package designed primarily for structural engineering applications. However, it can be used in a variety of applications for measuring accelerations up to ±4g and down to the ambient noise level. With full-scale recording ranges of ± 0.25 to ± 4g (user selectable) the EpiSensor provides on-scale recording of earthquake motions even at near-fault locations and in a wide variety of structure types.
